Download Hour1 Download Hour2Is the United States really the Freest country in the world? This week our ongoing reading of Susan Rosenthal's Power and Powerlessness deals how the capitalist system has changed the nature of the family to suit its purposes, and how in spite of the lip service given to family values, families today are buckling under the pressure generated by the drive for profit.
America is the freest country in the world. We're taught it in school, it's echoed in political campaign rhetoric, and repeated by everyday people, very often people who've never been to any other country. If one's life consists of going to work and obeying the orders of your boss, going shopping and paying for your purchases, driving home in a car with all the proper licenses and insurances, to a home on which all the rents, mortgages and taxes are paid, cooking dinner, watching TV and going to bed to do it all again tomorrow - even people in dictatorships are free to live that life.
