Susan Rosenthal, a doctor of both medicine and mental health, argues in this book that powerlessness and inequality is the root cause of most ill health. She reached this conclusion after decades of research, observation, and activism. This book explains that most people lack the healthy, fulfilling lives they deserve because they are kept powerless and mistakenly accept this state of affairs as natural or self-inflicted. Written for a popular audience, it asks, and then answers, four basic questions:

  1. What’s going on?
  2. How did this happen?
  3. Why do we put up with it?
  4. What will it take?
By Chapter:
  1. Does Anybody Really Care?
  2. Compassion Isn’t Cost-Effective
  3. Who Needs a Heart When a Heart Can Be Broken?
  4. Nature’s Youngest Child
  5. Seize the Surplus
  6. Compete or Die
  7. Burden the Family
  8. Profit from Pain
  9. The Lies That Bind Us
  10. Blame the Victim
  11. Divide and Rule
  12. Suffer The Children
  13. Decide Which Side You’re On
  14. Seize the Power
  15. Beware the Middle Ground
  16. Claim the Surplus
