Ignacio_Chapela is an academic and activist in the areas of microbial ecology. His PhD in the 1980's was on the ecology of microbial wood-rotting fungi. He is most widely known for Transgenic DNA introgressed into traditional maize landraces in Oaxaca, Mexico, a paper published in the journal Nature in 2001, which made him internationally famous. This paper gave evidence of the genetic pollution of Mexican heirloom crop varieties by GM crops, a finding that was heavily criticized by the GM lobby, but which was been subsequently confirmed by later research in 2009.
