James Douglass tells the story of how in just two years as 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy evolved from someone who could be controlled by the establishment, to a dedicated peace campaigner who was circumventing the military-industrial-congressional complex, to work directly at controlling nuclear weapons. His independence ultimately cost him his life, as he was challenging too many long established interests (such as the Federal Reserve and the CIA) and offering an example of independence to others.

The Warren committee concluded that he was killed by a 'lone nut' but, the United States House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) concluded in 1979 that those investigations were flawed and that Kennedy was probably assassinated as the result of a conspiracy<ref>http://www.archives.gov/research/jfk/select-committee-report/part-1b.html</ref>. There is considerable evidence implicating his successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, as a key player in this regard.
