Although it may seem contradictory to the 'economically literate', most of the world has run on a Gift Economy basis for most of history. Many places still do, they're just places you don't hear much about in the corporate media. The word "economy" comes from the greek "oikos", meaning household. Even in the belly of the capitalist beast, most households still run on a gift economy. Some have said that the whole world couldn't run on a gift economy basis, because a few people with no conscience could mess it up... not like the 'real economy' then;). However, they also said that planes could never fly unless they were lighter than air - it may just be a question of harnessing the right technology!
