| Episode #11 - Patriotism as Militarism (Nuclear Pollution in US and WW2 reconsidered) |
| ⌚ Sat 20 May 2000 ☻ Jay Truman, Michael Parenti |
Download Hour1 Download Hour2 This week we start by hearing about how the US government was uninterested in the deaths and injuries caused in the US by its nuclear bomb tests during WW2. We continue our lecture series with Michael Parenti. His lecture on "Superpatriotism" describes how the idea of 'patriotism' is used to manipulate people into becoming willing cannon fodder for the war machine, and who benefits from this. |
In the second hour, we take a look at a couple of shameful examples of the manipulation of patriotism. First, an interview with Jay Truman of Downwinders, a group striving to get the government to help the hundreds of thousands of people irradiated as a result of the US nuclear weapons program. Then, a different historical look at World War II by Michael Parenti - the US and the Allies could have nipped Nazism in the bud, but didn't because their real enemy was the Soviet Union.
