Even the consumer with the much vaunted 500 TV channels has had no say in what those 500 channels broadcast, but may only choose from what someone else has decided to make available. The role laid out for most people is to follow orders and not cause trouble. Tonight, we resume our reading from [[Disciplined Minds]] by Jeff Schmidt, which will examine the techniques the educational system uses to quietly reconcile people with their limited opportunity for a fulfilling life while perpetuating the myth of endless possibility.

But we'll begin the program from the opposite direction, how to approach the creation of a society where everyone really does get to make the decisions that effect our lives, instead of living as factotums in a hierarchy that serves the agenda of a few at the top. Mark Lance, an anarchist philospher and activist on the facuty of Georgetown university argues that in order to create a society of equals we must learn how to recreate ourselves - and that we must, in the here and now, not only protest what is oppressive, but strive to create institutions fit for free people.

Without the availability of cheap and potent energy, the continually increasing growth needed to maintain profitable globalized corporate markets will be impossible. The system is therefore both ecologically and economically unsustainable.

Given this situation, the administrations drive to war, the expenditure of billions on weapons manufacturing and the creation of new powers to surveil and control the domestic population becomes dangerously irresponsible as well as sinister. In the second hour we'll take a look at problem solving from the bottom up: the formation of a new electricity cooperative that gives residents of the Fingerlakes the ability to lower costs and support the expansion of sustainable energy production, and a group involved in a multi year international effort to develop an alternative vision to the present plan of global corporate control.

Two decrees put into effect only one day later, the ''Decree on the Protection of People and State'', subtitled, ''against communist acts of violence endangering the state'', and the ''Decree Against Treason of the German People and High-Treason Activities'' were used to annul practically overnight the essential basic rights incorporated in the constitution of the Weimar Republic. These so-called ''fire decrees'' stayed in effect until the end of the Third Reich and formed the pseudo-legal basis for the entire Nazi dictatorship.

Justified under article 48 of the Weimar constitution that allowed for suspension of rights in the event of national emergency, these decrees eliminated:
* Free expression of opinion
* Freedom of the press
* Right of assembly and association
* Right to privacy of postal and electronic communications
* Protection against unlawful searches and seizures
* Individual property rights
* States' right of self-government

A supplemental decree created the (Storm Troops) and SS Federal police agencies. Hitler's political opponents were rounded up, jailed and killed. What followed was a multi-year reign of terror that left tens of millions millions dead and brought on a world war.

In the aftermath of the third Reich, the oft asked question was "how could the German people allow these things to happen?" Easily. They simply did what they were told. They went to war when told. Turned in dissenters deemed enemies of the state in the name of national security. Didn't criticize their leaders, obeyed their bosses.

From the rigged 2000 presidential election to the questions surrounding foreknowledge of the September 11th attacks to the USA Patriot Act to the pre-planned invasion of Afghanistan to the snitch-on-your neighbor Operation TIPPs to the Department of Homeland security, it seems that 21st century Americans may be faced with a similar choice.
