What to say about this late, great people's historian? He tells the story in episode 199 of how, after taking unremarkable jobs, his experience as a bombadier in WW2 radicalised him. On his return to USA, he went to college to study history. After gaining a Ph.D, he return to the site of his bombing raids in WW2 and carried out research, interviewing survivors of his bombings.
